Well we think spring might come sometime in 2011 but have not seen any sign of it yet. This has been a pretty interesting year in the northwoods, and I know we are not the only ones in the state that have had their fair share of this wonderful winter. The bright side of it all is, it can't last that much longer!

The winter brought us lots of snow and cold, for those of you who might have been lucky enough to head down south. A 17 inch blast in March has left things white up here much longer than anyone would have liked. Regardless of the weather the grouse are drumming and the turkeys are gobbling. Also I heard rumor of a few walleyes spawning in the creek last night.

There has been a study on whitetail deer this winter that involves mortality of adult bucks, and fawns. The main reasoning in the study is to find what they die of whether it be wolf predation, bears eating fawns in the spring, hunters, or starvation. We should have the winter results here in the near future and go much more in depth on the subject if anyone is interested. All I can say is that it was a blast riding around with the group of people heading up the study. I witnessed many deer getting tagged and radio collared. Hopefully this will help them get a handle on the survival rate of one of our most precious resources up here. We had superb trail conditions for snowmobiles this winter and would like to thank the Lorretta Trailblazers for all of their hard work in keeping them up to snuff. Without this group it would not be possible to have a trailsystem as good as we do. If anyone is interested in becoming a member, or doing some volunteer work just stop in and get we will give you the necessary information.

Turkey season started last week and we found plenty of birds to hunt. Ben Imhoff kicked off the season with a nice 22 lb Tom. The birds we found gobbled early and then shut up around 8am. We are down though with the numbers of adults compared to years past. I think the winter took its toll on many of the birds around the north. The deer also had what looked to be tough winter. While shed hunting this spring I have found more dead deer than years past, with starvation being a big factor. That last big snow in March really had an effect on Turkeys and Deer. On the bright side of things, the Grouse seemed to have faired very well. We saw many groups of 5 to 6 with one covey of fifteen. They have dispersed from their winter coveys now and are drumming everywhere I stop.

We are still doing the fishing, Bear, and Grouse guide service and will include a few of the past fall's pictures. It was an awesome fall, we went 8 for 8 on Bear in five days. the biggest was a four hundred lb bruiser. Grouse season was good with tons of woodcock this year. In fact some days there were so many Woodcock around that they actually became a nuisance. The most we flushed in one day was 49 grouse and 78 woodcock. Fishing is still good my good friend caught a 40lb muskie on the Phillips Chain the first week of November. The fish was just a hog and he brought many happy memories home with him.

All is well at The Flambeau Forest Inn. Red's still grumpy, always a good sign that nothing has changed! We are excited to see everyone and hope that winter was good for all. A few new things this year are going to be pretty exciting for us. We have aquired a pig roaster that can double up as a monster grill, and it also has a roaster oven on it that will roast up to 100 ears of corn at a time. It has wheels and will travel if anyone has a big event coming up this summer. This is going to be a nice addition to our catering side of things. We are also in the process of setting up the "Inaugeral FFI golf scramble", and think this will be a very fun event for anyone that likes to whack a golf ball around. Thinking mid June but can't set a date yet. That would require having someone around a golf course right now. Last I checked most courses didn't know if they would be open by then due to the weather. Just kidding! Have a great spring (if it ever shows up) look forward to catching up with everyone.
